Digital Renaissance - Bay Area Cultural Innovation Forum

On September 8,2023, Science published a cover article featuring important research titled "Reducing single-use cutlery with green nudges: Evidence from China’s food-delivery industry" by a research team from the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, and the Asian Development Bank. The paper examines the impact of a green nudge practice on reducing disposable cutlery consumption and plastic waste by modifying the cutlery selection interface on the Ele.me food delivery platform.

Artificial Intelligence and Industrial Development Forum

"Rooted in Hong Kong, Integrated into China, Facing the World" – This year marks the 112th anniversary of the founding of the University of Hong Kong, and the 22nd year since the establishment of the Business School. Professor Eric Chan, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Hong Kong and Chair Professor of Economics, reviewed the development of the Business School at the forum. He mentioned that in recent years, the School of Business has been steadily advancing towards its goal of becoming a globally influential business school through the establishment of a dual-cycle education network both domestically and internationally. With strong support from the Futian District Government, the HKU Business School's Shenzhen Research Institutes has set up six research institutes. This forum, marking the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, aims to foster more collaborations with industry peers.

Professor Cai Hongbin, Dean of the HKU Business School and Chair Professor of Economics, delivered the welcoming remarks on behalf of the organizers. He straightforwardly emphasized the significance of the forum's theme "ESG Empowerment and Sustainable Development," pointing out that the world is facing common challenges such as climate change, environmental issues, pandemics, wealth disparity, all of which require global cooperation.

The future of search engines: ChatGPT vs Google, who will come out on top?

From November 2022, when OpenAI released ChatGPT, artificial intelligence sparked a trend. By February 2023, Microsoft took the lead by introducing a new version of its engine (Bing) powered by GPT technology. This marked the infiltration of chatbots into the field of "search." Today, users can directly ask search engines questions without the need for keyword searches to obtain results, seemingly shortening the path people take in looking for answers.

In May 2023, the Asian Development Bank announced the 2023 ADB-IEA Award for Innovative Policy Research, a collaborative paper by Prof. Li Hai Shi, Project Leader of HKU Business School Shenzhen Research Institutes (szri_en), on "We Are All in the Same Boat: Cross-Border Spillovers of Climate Shocks Through International Trade and Supply Chains". The paper "We Are All in the Same Boat: Cross-Border Spillovers of Climate Shocks Through International Trade and Supply Chains" was published by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Based on the extensive scientific research capacity of the HKU Business School, the Shenzhen Research Institutes (szri_en) leverage international leading research achievements, research directions, and research innovations to drive growth and progress throughout the Greater Bay Area. Following the efforts in the scientific research projects and topics set up in six research directions (i.e., economic strategy, financial technology, digital economy, smart health, ESG, and artificial intelligence), taking academic research, academic exchange, the cooperation in industry-university-research-application, and the talent introduction as its development goals, szri_en cooperates and communicates with economic entities, research institutes, innovation parks as well as other social sectors both domestically and internationally, with the aim of accelerating the transformation of high-quality scientific research outcomes in the Greater Bay Area.

The "Greater Bay Area - Shenzhen Futian Delegation" visited the HKU Business School Shenzhen Campus.

On June 21,2023, Mr. Huo Qishan, chairman of the China Commission of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, led the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area-Shenzhen Futian Inspection Troupe" and his party visited Shenzhen. Enterprise executives in different industries. In the first stop of arrival, the delegation came to the HKU Business School Shenzhen campus., which is located in Futian District, Shenzhen.
